"Imago" is all about transformation.

I heard the most beautiful metaphor for transformation that I know from Martha Beck - who compares it to a butterfly's development.

When a caterpillar is ready to become a butterfly, it creates a cocoon - and then completely dissolves into goo. The caterpillar's gone.

What remains are some very magical cells called "imago cells". These contain the information - or the image - needed for the caterpillar goo to reform into a butterfly.

Once the butterfly forms (that's some serious magic right there), it needs to fight its way out of the cocoon. This struggle is a vital part of the butterfly's evolution. It build's the butterfly's strength to be able to fly. If you try and help the butterfly out of the cocoon, it dies.

When the fully formed insect emerges, in its new form it's called an "imago".

Hindu philosophy says that the first step of creation is the dissolution of what was.

That can be pretty darn uncomfortable when it happens in your own life. It can be so hard to let go of what was, in order to make room for something new.

But the imago that emerges can be pretty darn beautiful.
